Video Tutorial: Remove image backgrounds in Figma
- Open an image, choose Local AI, then select the Remove background tab.
- Keep Automatic processing, or open Processing options to choose CPU.
- Choose Remove background. On first use, TinyImage automatically downloads the approximately 99 MB model, then creates the cutout. Later uses reuse the model while the plugin is open.
- Inspect the edges, then insert, replace or download the result. You can cancel the download or processing without changing the image.
Processing happens on your device; your image is not uploaded. The editor preview retains the original dimensions and soft transparency. Click Before to toggle the image from immediately before removal, or use Compare for a split view. Insert image and Download automatically trim fully transparent outer borders around the foreground, preserving soft edges. Replace fill keeps the full image dimensions and the existing layer placement. Current edits become part of its pixels; History restores the earlier image and edits.
Download PNG to retain transparency. JPEG places transparent pixels on white. Fine hair, fur, thin objects and complex backgrounds may need careful inspection. For manual cleanup, use Restore removed pixels in Paint brush to recover missing pixels from before removal, or Eraser to remove unwanted areas. See Canvas tools. Restoration is available while the before image matches the current canvas dimensions.
After successful removal, the button shows Background removed and is disabled for that image. Undo the removal in History, use Reset all edits, or open another image to enable it again. Other edits keep the button disabled, and saved projects retain this status.
