Importing 3D models to Figma

Import glTF, GLB, OBJ, and packaged ZIP models into Figma, adjust their view, or turn a flat image into a 3D isometric perspective with Convertify.

Use Convertify to position a 3D asset and add its rendered view directly to your Figma canvas. The resulting Figma layer is a transparent PNG snapshot with a 2,048-pixel longest edge. Convertify removes fully transparent outer pixels before creating the image fill, so the layer bounds fit the visible render. While Convertify remains open, you can select the layer and adjust its view again.

Supported 3D formats ​

  • glTF (.gltf)
  • Binary glTF (.glb)
  • Wavefront OBJ (.obj)
  • ZIP package containing one supported model and its linked files (.zip)

If a glTF or OBJ file uses separate .bin, .mtl, or texture files, select or drop the model and all of its linked files together. You can also place one model and its linked files inside a ZIP while keeping their relative folder paths intact, then drop the ZIP directly into Convertify.

Direct 3D source files can total up to 200 MB. ZIP packages can be up to 50 MB compressed and 200 MB after extraction.

Import a 3D model ​

  1. Open Convertify, click the Import into Figma tab, then choose Import 3D to Figma.
  2. Keep the Import 3D Model tab selected.
  3. Click the import area or drag in your model file. Include any linked files if the model depends on them, or drop a ZIP containing one model and all of its dependencies. After a preview is loaded, click Load another to browse for a replacement, or drop the replacement files directly onto the Load another button.
  4. Drag the preview to rotate the model. Hold Command on macOS or Ctrl on Windows and Linux while dragging to pan, or scroll to zoom.
  5. Adjust the model in the preview until you have the view you want.
  6. Click Add to canvas to insert that view as a rendered image layer in Figma. After insertion, further view changes stay in the preview until you click Update canvas.

Turn an image into a 3D Isometric Perspective ​

  1. Click the Import into Figma tab, choose Import 3D to Figma, then select Image to 3D Perspective.
  2. Add a PNG, JPG/JPEG, JPE, JFIF, WebP, GIF, AVIF, BMP, or SVG image, or select exactly one layer in Figma and click Use selected Figma layer. After a preview is loaded, click Load another to browse for a replacement image, or drop it directly onto the Load another button.
  3. Rotate, pan, or zoom the preview, then click Add to canvas. After insertion, further view changes stay in the preview until you click Update canvas.

When you upload another image or use a different selected Figma layer, Convertify keeps the current preview angle, pan position, and zoom. Click Reset view before loading the next image if you want it to start from the default view instead.

Images can be up to 50 MB. A selected Figma layer is captured locally as a transparent PNG at its current 1x size before the final 3D isometric perspective is rendered at 2K. The original layer is not changed, and its temporary image bytes are discarded when Convertify closes or restarts.

WebM is a video format rather than an image format, so it is not available in Image to 3D Perspective.

Re-edit an imported 3D layer ​

While Convertify remains open, select an imported 3D layer to restore its model and camera position. Adjust the preview, then click Update canvas when you are ready to replace the rendered image on the selected Figma layer.

If Convertify has been closed or restarted, select the 3D layer and drop the original source files or ZIP again. Convertify restores the saved view metadata; adjust the preview if needed, then click Update canvas to update the same Figma layer.

Original model and image files are held only in temporary plugin memory after you drop them in. They are discarded when Convertify closes or restarts. The Figma document stores only the rendered image layer and lightweight view metadata.

3D rendering and file processing happen locally inside the Convertify plugin. The generated Figma layer is a rendered image, not an editable mesh.
