Convertify imports a current Penpot ZIP/JSON .penpot file into new pages in your Figma Design file. Your existing pages remain separate from the imported design.
Penpot conversion is experimental. Review the import warnings and compare the resulting design before using it for delivery. Older binary Penpot files are not supported; download a fresh file from Penpot instead.
Import your design
- In Penpot, open the file's Main menu, choose File, then Download Penpot file (.penpot).
- Run Convertify in Figma and choose Import into Figma.
- Choose Import Penpot to Figma (Experimental) from the workflow selector.
- Leave Import color, text and variable libraries enabled to import those libraries, or turn it off if you only need the layers.
- Click the file chooser or drag your
.penpotfile into the plugin. Wait for the import result before starting another conversion. - Review the warnings, then inspect the new pages. Check text wrapping, fonts, image crops, component copies and important layout resizing.
File limits and failures
Import at most 50,000 layers at a time, including any component masters needed to reconstruct copies. The input archive must be no larger than 128 MB; expanded content is also limited. Split large files into smaller exports if a limit is reached.
An unsupported layer type or invalid archive can stop the import. Failed imports attempt to remove the pages and resources they created; if rollback cannot finish, the error identifies the remaining cleanup problem. Resolve that error before retrying.
WebP images are converted locally to editable PNG images for Figma. Their original WebP encoding and any animation are lost, and the import reports a warning.
Compatibility and editable content
- Fonts and text: make matching fonts available in the destination app. Font substitution and differences in whitespace handling, line spacing and font versions can change wrapping. Conversion preserves characters rather than inserting line breaks to force a visual match.
- Images and effects: images larger than Figma's 4096-pixel limit on either axis are resized locally and converted to PNG when importing. Layer geometry and normalized crop controls remain editable, but original pixel resolution, encoding and image metadata are lost. Check cropped edges and color profiles. Image interpolation and some shadows or effects render differently between the apps. Some image crops or unsupported paints require a baked image; the warning identifies the affected layer and lost controls. Keeping the layer editable does not mean every original paint property survives. Figma can close a stroked path that returns to its start; check its endpoint caps and join at the closure.
- Tokens: mathematical expressions and aliases that depend on them do not become live Figma variable bindings. Conversion retains resolved layer values and reports the unsupported bindings.
- Components: supported copies use local component masters. Some geometry or layout overrides require a separate local master; those copies remain editable and linked to that local master, but their original-master identity and future updates are lost. Conversion warnings identify these cases.
- Layers and layout: Figma Auto spacing exports without a minimum gap in Penpot. Its inactive fixed-gap value can return to Figma if spacing is unchanged; a variable bound to that inactive value remains in the token library without a live layout binding. Unsupported structures can require extra groups, local masters or an editable approximation. Check the warnings and test resizing; a matching image alone does not establish matching layout behavior. Hidden fixed-width text can lose its stretch alignment on return to Figma; check its layout when revealing or resizing it. Some centered fixed-size containers have symmetric padding larger than their saved box. Where supported, conversion keeps the box and live centered layout with zero padding on that axis, and reports the lost padding controls and bindings.
These workflows target Figma Design. They do not provide FigJam, Figma Slides or prototype-playback parity. Keep your source file and review important layouts in both apps.
