1. Generate your Figma personal access token

To connect your Figma file to the Commentful plugin, you’ll need to generate a personal access token in your Figma account:

  1. Go to your Settings panel (in the dropdown menu under your Figma account icon).
  2. Scroll down the Account tab in the settings popup to the Personal access tokens section.
  3. Click Generate new token.
  4. Set a Token name (eg. Commentful Figma Plugin).
  5. Set the Expiration dropdown option to No expiration.
  6. Ensure the the File content dropdown option is set to Read-only.
  7. Ensure the the Comments dropdown option is set to Write.
  8. All of the other dropdown options can be left as No access.
  9. Click the Generate token button.
  10. Click the Copy this token (this is your only chance to do so).

2. Paste your token and Figma file URL into Commentful

After you’ve generated your Figma peronal access token and copied it to your clipboard, run the Commentful plugin and then follow the steps below:

  1. Click Connect This Figma File button in the Commentful plugin.
  2. Paste your personal access token into the plugin and click the Save Token button.
  3. Click on the Share button in the top right of your Figma file to open the share popup.
  4. Set the Figma file permissions for Anyone with the link as can view.
  5. Click Copy link to copy the current Figma file URL to your clipboard.
  6. Paste your Figma file URL into the plugin and click the Save URL button.
If you’ve duplicated a Figma file from another file that was already linked to Commentful, you’ll need to re-link the plugin with your new Figma file URL from the duplicated Figma file by clicking the Re-link your Figma file button in the Commentful Settings panel.
