# Sharpen & upscale

> Improve image detail and increase pixel resolution while retaining the layer display size.

## Sharpen

Choose **Sharpen** for sharpening amount, radius and threshold, clarity, dehaze and noise smoothing. Inspect at **100%** and use **Before** or **Compare** to avoid harsh edges. Noise smoothing is a gentle finishing adjustment.

## Upscale

1. Choose **Upscale**. **Gentle** is the default and preserves more texture and grain. **Fast** uses stronger restoration; **Photo detail** uses a larger model and can take longer.
2. Choose **Download model**. The download is verified and stays available while the plugin is open. Your image is processed on your device.
3. Choose **2×** or **4×** and a processing mode. **Automatic** uses available graphics processing; CPU is available when graphics processing cannot run.
4. Choose **Upscale image**. Keep the editor open until it finishes, or cancel to retain your previous image.

Gentle and Fast download about 4.6 MB each; Photo detail downloads about 64 MB. Models are separate downloads and are not images. **Open model** accepts a compatible local ONNX model smaller than 100 MB.

The output is capped proportionally at 4096 pixels per side. **Insert image** keeps the original layer display dimensions, while downloads contain the higher-resolution bitmap. Current edits become part of the enhanced image. [History](/tinyimage/editor-history) restores the previous pixels and settings.

Processing speed depends on the image, selected model and device. Check the result at 100% before replacing a source fill.
