# Connect your Figma file to the Commentful plugin

> The first time you run Commentful, you'll need to link it to your Figma file by generating a Figma personal access token and adding your Figma file URL.

## 1. Generate your Figma personal access token

To connect your Figma file to the Commentful plugin, you'll need to [generate a personal access token](https://help.figma.com/hc/en-us/articles/8085703771159-Manage-personal-access-tokens) in your Figma account:

1. Go to your **Settings** panel (in the dropdown menu under your Figma account icon).
2. Scroll down the **Account** tab in the settings popup to the **Personal access tokens** section.
3. Click **Generate new token**.
4. Set a **Token name** (eg. _Commentful Figma Plugin_).
5. Set the **Expiration** dropdown option to **90 Days**.
6. Ensure the the **File content** dropdown option is set to **Read-only**.
7. Ensure the the **Comments** dropdown option is set to **Write**.
8. All of the other dropdown options can be left as **No access**.
9. Click the **Generate token** button.
10. Click the **Copy this token** (this is your only chance to do so).

> **Note:** Please note that Figma has removed the _No expiration_ option from the **Expiration** dropdown, so you will need to refresh your Figma personal access token every _90 days_. You will _not_ lose any data, comments or any review data if your Figma personal access token expires; the token just provides the Commentful plugin authentication to view the comments in your Figma file.

> **Warning:** ** Figma API Rate Limits (Effective Nov 17, 2024)** Figma limits API requests to **5 per minute** for Figma users on their Starter (free) tier. Commentful automatically mitigates this limit with caching and request limiting. For heavier usage (eg. posting many comments per minute via the Commentful plugin), consider upgrading to a Full Figma seat.

## 2. Paste your token and Figma file URL into Commentful

After you've generated your Figma peronal access token and copied it to your clipboard, run the Commentful plugin and then follow the steps below:

1. Click **Connect This Figma File** button in the Commentful plugin.
2. Paste your personal access token into the plugin and click the **Save Token** button.
3. Click on the **Share** button in the top right of your Figma file to open the share popup.
4. Set the Figma file permissions for **Anyone with the link** as **can view**.
5. Click **Copy link** to copy the current Figma file URL to your clipboard.
6. Paste your Figma file URL into the plugin and click the **Save URL** button.

> **Warning:** If you've duplicated a Figma file from another file that was already linked to Commentful, you'll need to [re-link the plugin](/commentful/setup/relink-figma-file) with your new Figma file URL from the duplicated Figma file by clicking the **Re-link your Figma file** button in the Commentful **Settings** panel.
